National Minimum Stipend
The national minimum stipends for EPSRC-funded PhD students can be found on the RCUK website.
Stipends are training awards to students. For EPSRC-funded students they are drawn from an EPSRC training grant to the relevant research organisation. In no circumstances should an EPSRC-funded student be asked to meet any short-fall from their stipend, or receive less than the RCUK national minimum stipend.
Where a student is part-time, the national minimum stipend will be according to the proportion of time e.g. for the minimum time commitment of 50%, the national minimum stipend would be 50% of the full-time rate.
Increases to Payment above Minimum
Research organisations have the flexibility to offer EPSRC-funded students an enhanced stipend, above the national minimum. This may be because of national or regional needs or recruitment and retention issues in certain research areas. See flexibility for more information.
The rate for Research Engineers undertaking an Engineering Doctorate is at least £1,500 above the national minimum stipend.
The indicative fee level can be found on the RCUK website.
While institutions are not regulated in terms of the fees they charge for postgraduate degree programmes, for all EPSRC funded students, any difference between the Research Council fee-payment level and what an institution charges should not be met by the student.
