CASE conversion target
EPSRC continues to encourage industrial collaboration through CASE awards in science and engineering. These awards are a type of doctoral studentship designed to incorporate an element of collaboration and industrially related training to broaden experience.
As part of delivering economic impact in our Delivery Plan period (2011 - 2015) and increasing company involvement in our provision of doctoral training, we are committed to increasing impact by further incentives to universities to increase the proportion of collaborative studentships within our Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP).
To support this, EPSRC has set institutions in receipt of DTP the target of converting 10% of its 2009 funds into CASE awards under the same terms as the Industrial CASE scheme. In order to be counted as a full CASE conversion:
- The student must be in receipt of a full award ie 100 percent DTP funded over the period of the studentship.
- The industrial partner provides extra funding to the project (a minimum of a third of the EPSRC funding) on top of the full DTP award.
- The student is jointly supervised and spends at least three months at the industrial partner who pays any travel, accommodation, subsistence costs etc.
Students supported this way are still funded through the DTP and as such should be reported as a Standard Research Student (DTP), in addition institutions are responsible for maintaining off line records to provide to EPSRC upon request.
Where it is not possible to support a full CASE conversion, EPSRC continues to encourage collaboration between universities and companies and within the flexibility of the DTP mechanism and an industrial partner can provide support to make up the studentship minimum award (subject to meeting the 50% rule).
Examples of collaborative training which do not constitute a full CASE conversion:
- Example 1: 50 percent DTP funds plus 50 percent industrial sponsorship.
- Example 2: 50 percent DTP, 50 percent non-EPSRC university funding plus additional industrial contribution.
