Durham University, leading a consortium including Edinburgh and Leeds universities and eighteen industrial partners, will establish a £9.3m Centre for Doctoral Training for the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs in the field of soft matter and functional interfaces.
Soft matter including plastics, paint and foodstuffs touches almost every aspect of daily life.
The Centre opened in 2014 and provides 16 PhD studentships each year.
Companies including AkzoNobel, Mars, Michelin, Procter & Gamble and Unilever have co-developed the programme in which students will experience placements in industry and overseas and take part in a mini-MBA to learn business skills.
