Polymer, soft matter and colloid science
Research and training in Polymer, soft matter and colloid science is vital to a wide range of UK industry and underpins much of the organic materials research where the UK community has a strong international position.
A centre concentrating on this priority area should include research into both the chemistry of components and the physics of interactions within soft-matter systems. There is an opportunity to combine experimental and theoretical training in polymer, soft matter and colloid science within a centre.
Industry interest includes the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector, personal care products, petro-chemicals, food and the large number of Societies of Mechanical Engineers operating in the plastic manufacturing sector.
Proposals should have strong links to and support from industry. Polymer, soft matter and colloid research and training should also be included in bids for other priority areas where appropriate.
