Plasma and high energy density physics
This priority area incorporates research into high temperature and high density plasmas, both magnetically-confined and generated using high-powered lasers. Low temperature and technological plasmas are an important additional area of research which has particular relevance to manufacturing and other technologies.
The UK is currently a world leader in magnetically confined fusion, and contributes significantly in expertise to inertially-confined fusion research. In addition to energy applications, the study of laser interactions and plasmas under extreme conditions provides insight into exciting new physics and applications. The applications of low temperature and technological plasmas extend into enabling new technologies, industry, and healthcare.
Maintaining and extending the UK's position of leadership in plasma and high energy density physics requires developing the next generation of researchers.
