Condensed matter physics

Condensed matter physics (including magnetism and superconductivity) is an area that has traditionally trained students within specific academic disciplines. The Centres for Doctoral Training approach can address the need to train students across disciplines (a need which has been identified by a number of stakeholders) and also opens up opportunities to provide training that links both theory and experiment, which has been identified as a core capability requirement for UK PhD students in this area.

Student training will benefit a number of stakeholder nominated skills gaps including superconductivity and magnetism, materials and devices, advanced materials, materials for next generation electronics, quantum fluids and solids, quantum coherence in superconductivity and spintronics.

Research in the area is relevant to the following Grand Challenges: Nanoscale Design of Functional Materials, Emergence and Physics Far from Equilibrium, Quantum Physics for New Quantum Technologies.
