Catalysis is a broad area where the UK is internationally competitive. It has a central role in Physical Sciences, being important in areas such as synthetic chemistry, physical chemistry, computational chemistry and materials science amongst others. Catalysis also underpins research in the Energy, Manufacturing and Engineering themes and is an important theme in the EPSRC Chemical sciences and Engineering grand challenges.
Proposals should have strong links to and support from industry. Engagement around the call for Centres for Doctoral Training indicated that there is a demand for researchers with skills in catalysis, with PhD students in this area sought after by industry. Training in this area should be included in other proposals where appropriate.
The UK has a broad research investment in catalysis and additionally EPSRC is investing significantly in the area by commissioning a Catalysis Technology Hub. Any centre in catalysis would support this investment and help maintain the strong international position of the UK in this area.
