Risk is the potential of experiencing a loss when a system, typically engineering or financial, does not operate as expected due to uncertain, difficult to predict events. Its consequences are particularly serious when they extend beyond the immediate engineering or financial disciplines to affect the natural environment and society in general. The CDT, based at the Liverpool Institute for Risk and Uncertainty, will provide training across the disciplines of engineering, mathematics, economics, the environmental sciences and psychology to produce PhDs with deep scientific understanding capable of expressing the meaning of risk in common language to the general public and decision makers.
