Physical Sciences

The Physical Sciences theme updated its fellowship priority areas in August 2017 to ensure that it aligns with the Balancing Capability strategy and to fulfil current community needs.

Statement of expectations

The Physical Sciences theme expects that successful early career fellowship applicants can evidence their potential to become leading and influential researchers by the end of their fellowship, in line with EPSRC's person specification for fellows. Through their application, potential fellowship candidates should aim to articulate evidence of their suitability for a fellowship against the following expectations:

  On application At the end of the fellowship
Team Leadership Can evidence the ability to enthuse, engage, encourage and develop their team members Has demonstrably advanced the careers of a diverse range of researchers, and has built a strong team of researchers.
Community Leadership Demonstrates evidence of networking skills locally, nationally and internationally by (for example) engagement with organising events or activities for their research community. Is acknowledged as a leader of their community, (for example) by leading, participating in, and invitation to networks, events, and collaborations.
Independence and collaboration

Can demonstrate independence from supervisor's research and vision, through (for example) independent publications and the development of personal collaborations.

Demonstrates a strong collaborative potential and a drive to work with others across the research community.

Has a clear independent research career, as evidenced by (for example) key note speaker invitations.

Can evidence research outputs from multiple collaborations with their research community.

Acting as an Ambassador for Science and Research Demonstrates a willingness to advocate for science and research, and some ideas as to how this might be done effectively in their context. Has engaged with the press, public and policy makers to promote their scientific outputs and the wider importance of science to the UK.
Research/Strategic Vision

Can articulate how their research fits into the wider national and international landscape

Articulates a clear and compelling vision for the research in their fellowship and a strategy to realise this vision.

Has delivered against the initial stages of their vision.
Career Planning Has a clear idea of where they want to be at the end of their fellowship, and how the fellowship will help them to get there. Has delivered against the goals of their fellowship, and developed clear new goals for accelerating their career further over the following 5-10 years.
Creativity and Innovation Drives a research agenda based on disruptive rather than iterative ideas. Has driven a change in the status quo in their research community, including bringing in researchers from other fields.
