Fellowships
EPSRC fellowships support talented and ambitious researchers to deliver research excellence and lead our research base in evolving towards a modern working culture.
Our fellowships provide applicants with the flexibility and freedom to design a package that fits their career ambitions, research needs and personal development requirements.
Your project can focus on discovery science, innovation, instrumentation/technique development or software engineering, or a combination of these. Applications for Open Fellowships can be across any topic in the EPSRC portfolio. Post-doctoral opportunities will vary across our themes as detailed within the application guidance document.
You can apply for up to three years of support for post-doctoral awards, and up to five years of support for open awards. We will also allow fellowships over shorter periods. You can spend between 50% and 100% of your time on a fellowship. If you want to work part-time, you can hold your EPSRC fellowship part-time as well, at a minimal level of 50% FTE. In these circumstances, the duration of your fellowship can be extended pro rata.
Overview of EPSRC's Fellowship Scheme
EPSRC fellowships support talented and ambitious researchers to deliver research excellence and lead our research base in the evolution of a modern working culture.
Our fellowships provide applicants with the flexibility and freedom to design a package that fits their career ambitions, research needs and personal development requirements.
Available fellowship opportunities
EPSRC's Capability and Challenge themes regularly review and prioritise the areas in which Fellowships will be offered. This is an ongoing process and will be updated on a regular basis throughout the Delivery Plan period.
Obligations of the host organisation
It is expected that eligible Research Organisations (see the UK Research and Innovation page on eligible Organisations) who wish to submit fellowship proposals to EPSRC will identify a number of suitable candidates as specified by the guidelines and within the defined research area and career stage. Research Organisations should only put forward the most able applicants.
Managing your fellowship
The EPSRC Fellowship offers a high degree of support for flexible working and for the individual’s own career goals.
This section gives details of how to manage your time during your Fellowship, including your responsibilities and those of your host organisation. The pages also link to information on transferring or moving your Fellowship, applying for other EPSRC funding, and extending or pausing your Fellowship.
Other fellowship opportunities
EPSRC occasionally offers Fellowships in partnership with external organisations, or with partner Research Councils across UKRI. Please note that these Fellowships may have different application and review requirements and processes. EPSRC Fellowship calls can be found on the EPSRC Calls Page. UKRI Fellowship calls can be found on the UKRI Calls Page.
EPSRC fellows gallery
EPSRC recognises the need for inspirational scientists and engineers to lead excellent research and therefore we invest in people with leadership potential at all career stages. The fellows gallery exhibits the profiles of some of our current fellows, information on their research and how the Fellowship has influenced their career.
