Process for new mid-range facilities
Mid-range Facilities are facilities that provide a service to the Engineering and Physical Sciences research community of a scale where there is limited availability in the UK for reasons such as:
- the relative cost of the equipment
- efficiencies of scale
- the expertise needed to operate the equipment and interpret results
- it makes sense to share information or software
If you believe that there is a UK need for a mid-range facility in a new area, please first contact the appropriate EPSRC theme in order to discuss your needs and vision.
EPSRC publishes a regular call for "Statements of Need" for mid-range facilities. Statements of Need should originate from the research community that will benefit from the facility rather than deriving from individual groups or institutions. Research communities are asked to submit one Statement of Need only for any proposed facility.
It is crucial that the Statement of Need addresses the question of why the mid-range facility model is the most appropriate, as opposed to other approaches.
All submissions will be tensioned against each other and against the current EPSRC Mid-range Facilities portfolio. At the end of this process, EPSRC will decide which facilities will go forward to an OJEU (Official Journal of the European Union) tender process.
Please note that there will be no Statement of Need call in 2016. The next Statement of Need call for mid-range facilities will be released in 2017.
