Call For Participation: Tomorrow's Engineering Research Challenges: Visions from the UK Community

Engineering is of vital importance to the UK. It is a diverse area that progresses ideas into reality to tackle every part of daily life, to mitigate the immediate consequences of climate change, to provide sustainable alternatives to our dwindling resources, and to generate resilient solutions to global health crises. As an academic discipline it has grown massively over recent years and the UK remains in a world-leading position in terms of academic excellence and thought leadership and continues its reputation as a melting pot of engineering ideas and innovation.

We would like to take advantage of our strong, dynamic research base and bring together inspirational and visionary researchers to identify and explore Tomorrow’s Engineering Research Challenges.

This initiative will result in the development of a roadmap of future opportunities that will contribute to the long-term sustainability of engineering research and skills and enable the next generation of engineers to be on the front foot for future revolutions be they industrial, environmental, economic or societal.

What we want to achieve:

We are inviting members of the research community to participate in a creative visioning exercise that will culminate in a series of workshops late November and early December 2021. These will not be like your typical webinars or workshops, but a progressive journey to identify the most important questions and greatest challenges facing engineers in the future, where new ideas, creative ways of working and radical solutions will be required to solve them.

To participate in this visioning exercise, we are looking for a group of people that are:

  • Passionate about engineering research in the UK
  • Eager and curious to connect and collaborate with a network of like-minded peers
  • Able to bring a diversity of perspectives, including those from outside of engineering
  • Open to hearing and developing novel ideas
  • Able to shape exciting opportunities for the future that could potentially redefine the discipline of engineering

If you fit any of these qualities, then we would encourage you to apply to attend a series of ½ day workshops on Tomorrow's Engineering Research Challenges: Visions from the UK Community taking place in November and December 2021.

Key dates for your calendar:

30 November (09:00 – 13:30 GMT)

1 December (09:00 – 13:30 GMT)

7 December (09:00 – 13:30 GMT)

9 December (09:00 – 13:30 GMT)

Please note that the agenda will be designed in a way that participants will be required to attend all the sessions. However, if you cannot attend, or can only partly attend, we would still value your input into the process via the questions in the application form.

How to get involved:

To register to attend the workshops and input into the discussion, please complete an application form at the link below by 24 October 2021.

https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/UKRI-Tomorrows-Challenges-Workshop/

Please note that your application does not guarantee attendance. All applications to attend will be reviewed by the organising team to ensure appropriate and diverse representation. Places are limited and in the event of over-subscription, an appropriate number will be selected to attend, and prioritisation will be based on the answers given in the application form. We would encourage applicants to hold the dates above in your calendar in the meantime. You will receive confirmation of your place at the workshops by 8 November 2021. If you are not selected to attend the workshops the answers you give in the application form will still contribute to the visions process.
