This report contains the outcomes of a workshop run by AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, NERC, and Innovate UK which was held on 21 July 2016 to scope the potential for a cross-council activity around the theme of the Circular Economy.

In February 2016, EPSRC held a workshop to explore the current research and training landscape in applied mathematics, to consider the evolution of the discipline since the International Review of Mathematical Sciences 2010 and to gather evidence of the quality, importance and capacity of the discipline in the UK. The outputs of the workshop provided evidence to inform the development of EPSRC's strategies for research areas in applied mathematics, as well as related research areas, over the next delivery plan period.
In February 2016 EPSRC organised a meeting to discuss the concept of human-like computing and what it would take to design systems that could emulate human performance. The starting point was the recognition that current artificial intelligence and machine learning systems were not human-like in their construction and had limitations in their applications.
EPSRC held a workshop in March 2016 which brought together a range of academics from the Mathematical Physics community. The aims of the workshop were to analyse and contextualise the current UK landscape for Mathematical Physics, and to engage with the community to discuss the direction of Mathematical Physics through the next delivery plan phase.

Dstl and EPSRC held a roundtable in Defining a Research Strategy for uncertainty in September 2015. The meeting brought together a range of academics, industrialists and government users across a range of disciplines including Applied Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, Operational Research, Political Science, Psychology and Statistics. The aim of the event was to investigate the current research landscape, explore common themes and discover big challenges in uncertainty.
EPSRC held an Operational Research Theme Day in September 2015. The workshop brought together a range of academics and users in areas of Operational Research including Mathematical Sciences, ICT and Engineering. The aim of the event was to look at the Operational Research portfolio including; the health of the people pipeline, strengths and weaknesses of the area, potential application areas and future visions.
In September 2015 an independent review of the quality of UK fission and fusion research was commissioned. EPSRC will use its findings to aid their deliberations on EPSRC's future strategy and priorities.

In June 2015 the EPSRC published this Review of Analytical Science in the UK following extensive consultation with all stakeholders involved with this research area. As a result of this a Review Group was commissioned to draw out recommendations to EPSRC, the research community and stakeholders based on the report's findings. These are now available here. EPSRC will consider the recommendations and work with the community on an implementation plan where possible.
