New Quantum Technologies funding boosts sector as annual showcase opens

Government funding announcements, of £80 million for the continuation of UK's Quantum Technologies Hubs and a further £235 million for the next phase of the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme (UKNQTP) - which will include the establishment of a new National Quantum Computing Centre, have boosted the sector ahead of the annual Quantum Technologies Showcase, taking place tomorrow, Friday 09 November 2018, at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, London.

Delegates will hear how the new funding will be employed to support the UKNQTP which is continuing to draw the country's research base together with industry, research funding bodies and other government agencies to build a new high tech industry in the UK.

The Showcase event has been organised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, and the partners in the UKNQTP. It will demonstrate the progress being made by the Programme, including work carried out by the Quantum Technologies Hubs, companies, the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

Professor David Delpy CBE, Chair, UK National Quantum Technologies Programme Strategic Advisory Board, said: Over the last four years there has been a strong focus through the UKNQTP on turning science into technology and products. Participation by industry has grown considerably since the Programme started in 2014, and has outstripped all original predictions and hopes.

This growth in industry participation and the continued coordinated effort and focus on a common programme, has resulted in the Quantum Technologies Showcase growing larger year on year, and this fourth event has over 80 exhibits.

This year's exhibits include technologies, products, businesses and services from a mix of academia, industry and government organisations demonstrating the significant technical and commercial progress that continues to be made and the relevance to a growing number and variety of commercial sectors.

The displays at the showcase are structured to demonstrate the relevance of quantum technologies to commercial sectors, and have now expanded from eight to cover twelve sectors for 2018.

Professor Lynn Gladden, EPSRC's Executive Chair, said The links between the UK's research base and industries that can exploit and benefit from quantum technologies have been developed and strengthened by the National Quantum Technologies Programme. This year's showcase demonstrates how quickly the UK is moving ahead in this field.
