New appointment to EPSRC Council

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has appointed a new member to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s (EPSRC) Council – Dr Joe de Sousa, – Dr Joe de Sousa, Pharmaceutical Technology & Development, AstraZeneca UK Ltd.
Council is responsible for supporting and challenging the Executive Chair to ensure the effective delivery of EPSRC’s mission; prioritizing funding distribution between the disciplines in EPSRC’s field of activity; and encouraging collaborative working across UKRI and the wider research and innovation community, to foster strategic relationships.
EPSRC Council members represent research and innovation across higher education, industry and commerce, policy and/or civil society, reflecting different characteristics and professional backgrounds.
Dr Neil Viner, EPSRC Deputy Executive Chair, welcomed Dr de Sousa’s appointment, saying: “Joe will be an excellent addition to EPSRC Council and will bring significant experience and expertise across the R&D landscape to the role.
“Council plays a vital role in advising EPSRC to meet its vision of ensuring the UK is the place where the most creative researchers can deliver world-leading research with genuine economic and societal impact.”
Today’s announcement is one of a number of Council appointments made by UKRI.

Dr de Sousa has extensive experience in people, project and scientific leadership within the global pharmaceutical industry. He has delivered across all stages of pharmaceutical R&D including pre-clinical research, clinical development and regulatory approval and has had leading roles in the development of many new medicines across a wide range of disease areas.
Joe completed a DPhil at University of Oxford and is a Chartered Chemist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at The University of Manchester. He has previously been a member of the EPSRC Strategic Advisory Network and prior to that was a member of the Healthcare Technologies Strategic Advisory Team.
