The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, is proud to be celebrating the inaugural World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its Engineering Global Grand Challenge Retreat Workshop in London.
UNESCO, with the support of all its member countries and more than 80 engineering organisations worldwide, decided to proclaim March 4 every year as the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. The day recognises that engineering will play a key role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and will contribute to developing practical applications in areas such as food, water, energy, environment, sustainable cities, and natural disaster resilience.
World Engineering Day will be celebrated on the second day of EPSRC’s Engineering Global Grand Challenge Retreat Workshop in London, where approximately 60 delegates – from among EPSRC’s Frontier Engineering Projects, Engineering Grand Challenge Projects, and Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) projects – have come together to gather lessons learned from EPSRC’s investment of more than £50m investment into research which tackles the grand challenges we face in the future, to explore how engineers can work in a multidisciplinary way, and to help define future grand challenge areas.
With ten years left to achieve the United Nations SDGs , EPSRC is committed to supporting cutting-edge research that addresses the grand challenges faced by humanity. “It is vitally important that any future solutions to address Global Grand Challenges continue to be defined and driven by the research community” says Andrew Lawrence, Head of Engineering at EPSRC
“Celebrating World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during our Retreat not only underscores the important role Engineers will play in achieving the SDGs but allows us to reflect on the important role engineers have played in our modern world.”
