EPSRC is pleased to announce that Professor Nick Eyre from the University of Oxford has been selected to act as the End Use Energy Demand Centre Champion for the development of a National End Use Energy Demand (EUED) Centre.

Professor Eyre's appointment was revealed to colleagues from the six EUED Centres, formed in 2011, attending a EUED Gala event held July 03-04, 2017 at Lancaster University.

The current Centres conduct research into the technical, social and economic foundations of energy demand and address issues that are important for policy, industry, and the many organisations involved in establishing and also reducing future demand in buildings, transport and many other areas of daily life. The 'gala' event is reviewing progress so far and each Centre is sharing examples of their research, focusing on what worked well and flagging up any significant barriers.

The position is the first milestone as part of a two-stage call that will coordinate the development of a proposal for a National End Use Energy Demand (EUED) Centre.

Kathryn Magnay, EPSRC's Energy Theme Lead, said: This is a really important role and EPSRC is delighted to confirm Nick Eyre as the EUED Champion. As Champion he will be expected to act as a thought leader and flag bearer for the EUED community, and be responsible for setting the overarching strategy for the centre. This will be in consultation with the community and key public sector and industrial stakeholders. We are confident that Nick will draw in everyone who has a contribution to make to the success of the national EUED centre.

In 2011, in response to the International Review of Energy 2010 outcomes, EPSRC and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) launched a call to fund jointly a series of centres focused on multidisciplinary energy demand reduction research. Six centres, listed below, were funded and formed the base for the UK Research and Innovation EUED Programme.

EPSRC and ESRC recognise the value and importance of continued multidisciplinary research in this area and following on from consultations the research councils took a wide variety of inputs and developed a single centre model, which is designed to continue to support the UK's research capacity in the area and its delivery.

Current EUED Centres are:

  • DEMAND (Lancaster) - The DEMAND Centre tackles the fundamental question of what energy is for. Achieving greater energy efficiency is important, but the trend is often towards more resource intensive standards of comfort, convenience and speed.
  • i-STUTE (Warwick) - The interdisciplinary centre for Storage, Transformation and Upgrading of Thermal Energy is dedicated to examining the potential for energy use reduction in heating and cooling.
  • CIE-MAP (Leeds) - Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Product, Working closely with government and industry, the Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Products conducts research to identify all the opportunities along the product supply chain that ultimately deliver a reduction in industrial energy use.
  • CSEF (Brunel) - The aim of the Centre is to carry out fundamental research into innovative technologies and approaches for energy demand reduction in food chains.
  • CIED (Sussex) - The Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand seeks to develop a socio-technical understanding of the emergence, diffusion and impact of low energy innovations.
  • UK Research and Innovation CEE (UCL) - UCL- Energy has focused the UK Research and Innovation centre on an energy epidemiological approach that looks to re-interpret the health sciences research structure.
