Fancy experiencing resonant interaction? Resonant Bits is a fundamentally new way to interact with digital devices using rocking, shaking, swaying and wobbling. The concept arose in collaboration with Stuart Nolan, a research magician, whilst investigating new methods for measuring subconscious movements of the body.

Spacebar Play/Pause when the seek bar is selected. Activate a button if a button has focus.
Play/Pause Media Key on keyboards Play / Pause.

Next Track Media Key on keyboards Moves to the next track in a playlist.
Left/Right arrow on the seek bar Seek backward/forward 5 seconds.
J Seek backward 10 seconds in player.
L Seek forward 10 seconds in player.
Home/End on the seek bar Seek to the beginning/last seconds of the video.
Up/Down arrow on the seek bar Increase/Decrease volume 5%.
Numbers 1 to 9 on the seek bar (not on the numeric pad) Seek to the 10% to 90% of the video.
Number 0 on the seek bar  (not on the numeric pad) Seek to the beginning of the video.
Number 1 or Shift+1 Move between H1 headers.
/ Go to search box.
F Activate full screen. If full screen mode is enabled, activate F again or press escape to exit full screen mode. 
C Activate closed captions and subtitles if available. To hide captions and subtitles, activate C again. 
Shift+N Move to the next video (If you are using a playlist, will go to the next video of the playlist. If not using a playlist, it will move to the next YouTube suggested video).
Shift+P Move to the previous video. Note that this shortcut only works when you are using a playlist.

I’m Pete Bennett and this is Mike Fraser, from the Interaction and Graphics Group in Bristol University, and we are talking about Resonant Bits where we have a stands full of toys and gadgets to play with. The basic premise for all of this is we ask question can you interact with a digital device by simply placing it in the palm of your hand and focusing on it. This stems from various industry projects with a magician at the Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol, who was particularly interested in ouija boards. We helped him collaborate to produce a canary powered ouija board, which we have taken on to use in various other projects.

Absolutely, so we are working this concept up to new forms of brain-computer interaction with your mobile devices. We think we can produce techniques that are better and more resilient than most current approaches to thinking what you want to happen with your phone, using these side channels like resonance behaviours in your body. But we also are interested in how you take these contexts and turn them into interesting industrial engagements, and we’d be very happy at the stand to also talk to you about ultra-haptics which is our previous interaction technique spin-out, which has just received £10 million of venture capital, and is looking really, really good. So we think this might be the next opportunity to produce something of that scale that is based on that interaction technique, and we’d be very happy to talk about the processes behind that as well.
