Healthcare Technologies Challenge Awards
Intention to submit a proposal closing date: 15 November 2016
The EPSRC Healthcare Technologies theme invites applications to an initiative designed to create a cohort of the most promising future leaders who will develop new research capabilities across the EPSRC portfolio to address unmet healthcare needs. This call is intended to support early career researchers (ECRs) to develop a personal programme of high quality, creative and multidisciplinary research; and to build and grow their research group. A budget of £7-10million is available to support approximately 7-10 personal awards of up to five years' duration.
This call seeks to enable ECRs to realise their transformative research vision which addresses long term health challenges, through a flexible and high profile award. Applicants to this call should have demonstrable leadership potential, both in terms of team leadership and research field leadership, and they should be strongly supported by their host institution. EPSRC seeks applicants who want to revolutionise healthcare technologies both through the development of transformative fundamental research and through the integration of approaches which ensure user needs are considered. Furthermore, applicants should seek to design their research to minimise the barriers to the implementation of its outputs in a healthcare context.
This call is closely aligned to the Healthcare Technologies strategy; a framework for thinking about how Computational, Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences researchers can tackle current and emerging health challenges facing society. Applications to this call should bring a creative and multidisciplinary approach to one of the grand challenge areas, and should also clearly identify how the proposed research and collaborations have been designed to support and shorten the pathway to impact in health.
For more information on this strategy, please refer to the Healthcare Technologies strategy page.
The call is also related to EPSRC's delivery plan outcome of a Healthy Nation.
If you are at all unsure as to whether your proposed research fits the remit of the call please contact EPSRC before preparing an application.
This call is suitable for academics that have held a permanent academic post at an eligible institution for a maximum of eight years at the closing date for full proposals. Applicants who do not meet this condition but who have followed a non-standard career path can be flexibly accommodated by this scheme. In such a case, applications should be within the spirit of the scheme, any applicants with questions should contact the EPSRC.
Anyone intending to submit a proposal to this call must register their intention to submit by 16:00, 15 November 2016. The proforma can be found below on this page (see the "How to Apply" section of the full call document for detail). Applicants that do not register their intent to submit before the deadline will be ineligible for the call.
There are no constraints on the number of applications which may be submitted from a single institution through this call. However, EPSRC expects that universities will only put forward the most promising candidates. Candidates must ensure that they have the support of their university before preparing an Intention to Submit.
EPSRC reserves the right to ask universities from which we receive a significant number of Intentions to Submit, to undertake some internal prioritisation between the Intention to Submit and the full proposal stage.
This call will build on the successes of the previous Healthcare Technologies Challenge Awards call and of the Challenging Engineering scheme.
