EPSRC Centres for Mathematical Sciences in Healthcare
EPSRC intends to commit up to £6 million to support the creation of Multidisciplinary Research Centres, bringing together researchers working in the Mathematical Sciences with academics and stakeholders within the Healthcare Technologies space.
The focus of each Centre will be a programme of world leading, challenge led, novel research addressing significant mathematical or statistical challenges of direct relevance to Healthcare Technologies. Networking and knowledge exchange activities will also be important elements within successful Centres. Centres will be expected to engage new academic, industrial and/or clinical partners over the lifetime of the award.
We have identified the following areas of research which have the potential to derive benefit from a cross-disciplinary research centre:
- Multiscale modelling and multi-modal data integration in Healthcare.
- Complex networks in Healthcare.
- Innovative design of clinical trials.
However, we will also consider applications for Centres which seek to address mathematical science challenges of direct relevance to Healthcare Technologies outside of these topics, provided the timeliness, novelty and potential impact of the research can be demonstrated.
We expect successful Centres to be led by a Principal Investigator with a strong track record of research in a relevant field and with a demonstrable ability to collaborate effectively with researchers from other disciplines.
The call comprises a two-stage process. An Outline proposal stage, where submissions will be reviewed by an Expert Panel, will be used to identify applications suitable for invitation through to the Full proposal stage. Full proposals will be independently peer reviewed and a response by the Principal Investigator will be invited where appropriate. An Expert Interview Panel will rank the applications based on the reviews, response and the performance of the application representatives.
The deadline for submission of outline proposals will be 16:00 on 29 January 2015.
For more information on the scientific context of this call see the report of the Scoping Workshop on EPSRC Mathematical Sciences in Healthcare, which is available via the link on this page, under "Resources".
