Holmes Hines Memorial Fund application information

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) acts as trustees for the Holmes Hines Memorial Fund, a charitable bequest with the aim of providing funds to support the advancement of science. The fund is comparatively small, but makes several small awards each year. The applications can cover any area of science but applications concerning astronomy or particle physics are asked to apply in the first instance to the Small Awards Scheme run by our Research council Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC).

If you would like to make an application, the following information should be included in your proposal. Please make sure you address all these points and give as much information as possible especially in regard to costs, and other sources of funding.

  • Full details of your project, including numbers of students involved and the age range
  • Timescale
  • How much funding you require
  • As much costing information as possible
  • Overall benefit of the project
  • Whether you have approached, or are receiving funding from other sources. It would be expected that Higher Education Institution's (HEIs) would use their own outreach funds.

Please note that the Holmes Hines Memorial Fund does not normally fund:

  • Administration costs
  • Speakers’ fees
  • General staff costs
  • An individual’s educational qualifications.
  • Individuals directly.  Awards are normally made to registered charitable organisations, educational establishments or similar organisations

Recent successful applicants have received funding for items / equipment that can be used for multiple events and over several years and consumables used in science clubs and events.

Please note that the Holmes Hines Memorial Fund is not funded by EPSRC. It is funded entirely from a charitable bequest. Examples of the levels of funding available over the last three years:

  • Highest award: £1,500
  • Lowest award: £55
  • Average award: £500

Successful applicants must provide an expenditure report following the completion of their project / event. This is one of the terms and conditions of an award.
