Our remit covers engineering and the physical sciences: we fund research into chemistry, engineering, information and communications technologies, materials, mathematical sciences and physics. Though we do not have restrictions on application areas, the majority of research we support must be in engineering and the physical sciences.
The same application cannot be submitted for consideration by more than one Research Council at any one time.
For interdisciplinary research at the interface between Research Councils, it is often difficult to know who to submit a proposal to. Before you commit yourself to producing a full proposal that may cross Research Council remits, we encourage you to contact us to discuss which council is most appropriate.
Unsure whether to apply to EPSRC?
If you're unsure if EPSRC is the best Research Council for your proposal, the advice below may be helpful:
- View our Research Areas and Portfolio Themes to see if your research matches our structure.
- Search EPSRC staff contacts to find the person responsible for the area closest to your proposed research, who may advise contacting an alternative Research Council or forward you to the relevant Remit Queries email address.
- Research Councils UK hold links to other Research Councils who you may find are more appropriate for your proposal.
- Search Grants on the Web (GoW), our portfolio of funded grants, to see if EPSRC have funded any related projects in similar research areas.
Funding across Research Councils
Research Councils have a Cross-Council Funding Agreement for considering proposals at the boundaries of their remits.
